Rahil in Malaysia

Rahil and his Mom and Dad flew from Delhi to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday, October 22nd. To his parents' bewilderment, Rahil spotted classmates at the Delhi airport, on the flight, and at the Kuala Lumpur airport. Here's a day-by-day account:

22 Oct 2011: Arrive in KL and drive downtown to the Traders Hotel, opposite the ho-hum in photographs and Holy Cow! in person Petronas Towers.

23 Oct 2011: KL city tour. Stops at the National Palace; the Butterfly park, with its incredible collection of the world's creepiest living and dead insects; the Bird park, where Rahil and Dad posed for photos with hornbills, macaws, owls, and God-knows-what else; and the National Independence Monument, among others.

24 Oct 2011: Took a very, very long cable car ride up to Genting Highlands, a resort and theme park high above the city. Rahil rode lots of rides, including his first bumper car ride.

25 Oct 2011: Fly to Kota Kinabalu in East Malaysia, known to us as Borneo. Visit the city mosque before driving to the Shangri-La Rasa Ria resort north of the city. Passed malls containing Toys 'R' Us outlets on the way(!).

26 Oct 2011: Diwali! A sunrise walk on the beach permitted Rahil to auspiciously find his first sand dollar. Late in the morning saw a trip to the orangutan sanctuary. After an afternoon in the water park and making rangoli with the staff, in the evening Rahil, Mom, and Dad went on a boat up a nearby river to view fireflies and were treated not just to amazing displays but also to a river full of bioluminescence plankton. At night everyone watched lightning in the distance. Truly a festival of lights.

27 Oct 2011: A field trip to Mt. Kinabalu National Park. At 4095 meters (and growing about 5 mm annually), it's the highest mountain in southeast Asia. The national park had over five thousand species of plants cataloged, of which over one thousand were orchids.

28 Oct 2011: Rahil and Dad shot a round at Dalit Bay Golf Course, with its magnificent 11th hole, featuring surf to the west and Mt. Kinabalu to the east. Rahil discovered one of his classmates (different than the ones spotted at the airports and on the plane) was staying at the same resort.

29 Oct 2011: Return to Kuala Lumpur and the Traders Hotel. Visit the Telecommunications Museum and the KL Tower, including the latter's mini-zoo below, with its phenomenal collection of live, HUGE, hairy spiders.

30 Oct 2011: Return to Delhi.

Despite Dad still being covered with all kinds of weird bumps, he highly recommends Borneo for anyone in the vicinity.
