bill and ada were my mother's uncle and aunt. valarie...i remember your family well,they spoke of you often and your family was like family to them. i rememer your drawings on my uncles wall !!! bill strid....THANK YOU for keeping it as it was our my children and family have such great memories...(they paid 10,500 i have the deed) i was lucky enough to inherit bill o'malley's cartoons..if you need a few for decor let me know. last but not least peter...bill lived a long life and passed peacefully in his sleep ada lived well into her ninties...all but a couple months in there home. thanks to all that wrote any questions i may try and answer contact at jack@jackhowe.net

Does anyone know if Bill O'Malley was friends with the humorist/author H. Allen Smith? I have a book of Smith's "Life in a Putty Factory" with O'Malley's signature inside, dated 1/27/45. Thanks. Amy

I have inherited a box of family items for Glenn Anglin Griffin. Among the items are original cartoon drawings by Bill O'Malley. I know that he worked with my 1st cousin Glenn Anglin Griffin at the San Francisco Call/Bulletin. If there is a family contact, I would like to send jpgs of the drawings so that they have them in their files.

I grew up in Carmel in the house next to Bill and Ada. Since my own grandparents lived on the East Coast, Bill and Ada became our "local grandparents." My family remained close with Ada until her death. I have many fond memories of the two of them- and Ada shared numerous, wonderful stories with me and my sisters over the years. My understanding is that Bill was initially a sports writer and that they met in San Francisco where Bill was living in a house with a number of his siblings. My family also has a number of pieces of original art work from Bill and my Mom was the subject of one of his cartoons.

I have inherited a marvelous tintype cartoon by Mr. O'Malley - done for my grandparents 10th wedding anniversay in San Francisco. My grandfather worked for the examiner and knew he and his wife. The tintype is probably from the late 1920's.

It would have been 1944 in the Glenview neighborhood, Oakland, CA, and I was delivering the Oakland Tribune to the O'Malley's apartment. What remains vivid today, is their out of the ordinary kindness shown to me. My other remembrance was concern for Bill's health. He frequently looked ill, and when they moved, the O'Malley's memory lingered on.

my companion and i purchased the house in carmel california that bill and ada o'malley lived in. the house came with an original bill o'malley cartoon that depicts the house and jests about the unpredictable climate in carmel. the cartoon hangs prominantly in the guest room that was the original living room.

Dear editor ! It was very interesting to read your website ! In 1955, I was an 16 years old stevard-aprentic onboard the norwegian cargoliner M/S Risanger of Bergen / Norway, at that time a very elegant combined cargo & passengerliner - for max 12 passengers. On a 18 days journey from - Europe to Long beach / Calif. USA, I had the pleasure to serve Mr. and Mrs. O.Malley. Before they left the ship, Bill O' Malley. made a personal simple draving of me incl. a personal dedication to me. During the the past 51 year, my memorys from that journey, have been more valuable, due to the fine contact I got with the O'Malleys. They was both very smiling and kind, and a very gentle couple. When I so the picture of Mr. O Malley's smiling face at your Website, I reconiced him immi. In my hometown Berge / Norway, we have had a famous humorist / cartoonist active 1940 - 1990, named Mr. Audun Hetland. If you ever come to my exotic, one tousen year old hometown Bergen, you must visiting Mr. Hetland's museumshop at the world heritahe building-site BRYGGEN. Bill O'Malley was a Carmel Ca. cartoon artist. He wrote ten books ,"Two Little Nuns","O'Malley's Nuns","More O'Malley's Nuns","Sister Colleen and Sister Maureen"," Blessed Event" (child birth)," Golf Fore Fun","Fore and Aft" (both golf)and "Classroom Cartoons". The books were published by ,Extension,E.P.Dutton, Prentis-Hall,Perma, and Pocket Books form 1950-the 70's. He also had strips "Lil Sister"and "The Reverend"(united features and king syndicates). O'Malley's cartoons appeared in Saturday Evening Post, Collier's,Post,Look,Playboy,Ladies Home Journal , N.Y.Times,Wall Street Journal and virtually all American mags during the 40's ,50's,60's until his death in the mid 70's. He was in carmel during the years of Jimmy Hatlo, Hank Ketchum,Eldon Dedini(who sadly passed last month), Gus Ariola, Bill Bates, etc.. Bill O'Malley and his wife Ada (Goldman) had no children,yet many of his cartoons dealt with children,along with golf, travel,and of course nuns. I hope this info helps you .
