b. March 20, 1892 in Prairie City, Illinois. Exhibited his work as a kid in the window of his father's restaurant. Worked in a plow factory after finishing public school, then as a freight hustler, mill hand, steel tank worker, and sign painter before studying at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1913-14. He grossed fifty cents upon the sale of his first cartoon.
Cartoonist for the Denver Rocky Mountain News (1919-1921) and the Indianapolis News until 1947.
