How on earth did you get the signed Calvin and Hobbes? Ever since I was a kid I wanted to try and get one but it is pretty much impossible.

Calvin was psychopathic in the same way Seinfeld characters were--he was a mirror to society's most base instincts. The cartoonist did not promote murder or hatred. Some things might have been predictable, but most of it was not--some very philosphical.

Bill Watterson and his magical characters have provided our family with countless hours of enjoyment. My 14 year old son goes to sleep most nights with C&H. In elementary school "talent contests", while most kids played the guitar or danced, our son would recite C&H strips assuming the role and personna of each character. The satirical life-lessons provided in Bill Watterson's books, provide a better education than most classrooms. Calvin and Hobbes s/b essential reading for every child!

the fact that someone can tant this classic comic with their over analyzed angle for censorship is truely more disturbing than a cartoon child with a fantastical imagination. you call the strip "predictable", however- i think that may be it's most endearing quality. recognition is what makes one feel connected, safe, comfortable, and is certainly at the core of our ability to relate to one another. cheers calvin, hobbes... we had some great times together!

I despise "Calvin and Hobbes". Calvin was an arrogant psychotic who fantasized about blowing up his school and murdering his teacher. Please do NOT reply "Hey, he's just a kid!". Fantasies like that are NOT part of a normal childhood!

The "Calvin and Hobbes" strip became so predictable, I would read the first panel, guess the "surprise" ending, then check the last panel to see if I'd got it right: invariably, I did. For instance, the first panel shows a huge whale breaching the ocean. So I guessed: "This is Calvin's latest fantasy in the bathtub while his mother is trying to give him a bath." Then I skipped directly to the last panel to check if I'd guessed it. Sure enoough...

Bill Watterson's comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes, is the chronicle of a six-year-old's psyche. The strip, first syndicated in 1985, was carried in more than 2,400 newspapers when it ceased publication January 1, 1996

I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Watterson. He had created the most popular, well developed, and widely read comic strip in years with Calvin and Hobbes, but he never took the easy way to get there. He alone wrote, drew and even colored all his own strips. He also never marketed his creation to appear on coffee mugs, T-shirts, greeting cards, etc., because he felt it would cheapen the strip. To halt the marketing of Calvin and Hobbes, he needed to fight the corporate syndicates for many years, as the first contract he signed made marketing a real threat. Not only did he win that fight, but he also won the ability to escape the Sunday comic strip templates, and was able to use the space however his saw fit. Unfortunately, the strip ran it's course along the same lines as Bloom County and The Far Side did and went off the paper on January 1, 1996. I miss Calvin and Hobbes, but you can't help but respect Mr. Watterson for all he did, and what he didn't do.

In a letter to newspaper editors announcing his retirement, Watterson stated: "This is not a recent or easy decision, and I leave with some sadness. My interests have shifted, however, and I believe I've done what I can do within the constraints of daily deadlines and small panels. I am eager to work at a more thoughtful pace, with fewer artistic compromises."
