Thursday August 27th

Rahil's first full day in Bhopal was a busy one.

After breakfast (accompanied by his trusty flute), Rahil set out for Van Vihar National Park, home to at least six sloth bears, two leopards, several enormous crocodiles, a family of deer, a star tortoise, and a number of water birds. Apparently a lion and several tigers are there, too, but we didn't see them. (The enclosures cover several acres.) Before lunch there was time for a visit to the magnificent Taj-Ul Masjid, where Rahil was more intrigued by the fish in the center pond then the surrounding architecture.

After lunch he drove 60 km to Bhimbetka, a world heritage site featuring several hundred caves and innumerable prehistoric (that is, up to 10,000 years ago) cave paintings. On the way back, Rahil stopped at a Shiv Mandir (a temple to Shiva), featuring a very large (approximately 20' tall) lingum. Rahil claimed he wanted to perform a puja (prayer ceremony), but really he just wanted to ring the bells. (See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3A9K-cmwuw for the video.)

Finally, as evening rolled in, he went to the Bharat Bhavan, a large art center overlooking the central lake.
