Thank you all for all the input. Oddly, this entry was more of an afterthought (I liked my other exhibition entries more)--but this is the one getting a little more attention. It really was just a snapshot on an outting in a corn maze on a cold and very muddy day (that's why she's being carried). This version is severely cropped already to crop to just herself and the corn. I hadn't decided yet whether the black jacket bothered me or not, I think the scarf off to the left bothers me more--but I left it as I didn't want to crop her hair. The V of the jacket and the color inside doesn't bother me. I seldom use flash, so don't really know how to...but I think I used fill flash in this case. It's just the on-board flash, as I don't have any external flashes of any kind. I don't know much about catchlights--so didn't realize centered ones might be a no no :). I can see where maybe it could be toned down on her face. Thank you for all the stuff to think on!

Kiki, if by 'good with shapes' you meant me...thank you, very high praise indeed.

On second thoughts, I might have toned down the reflection on forehead and nose a wee bit also.

Victor: The fill-flash purpose is fulfilled with success here IMO. Eyes could be retouched easily but I agree, centered catchlights is a little stingy.

K2, I agree with you about the flash. I think that distracts from the photo more than the black jacket does. It would be OK for fill, I suppose, but it should be at least a stop darker (I'm talking about the flash, not the overall picture). It would also be nice if the flash were off center so the center of the model's pupils wouldn't be blocked by the specular light. Catch lights are fine, but not in the center of the pupils. -- Victor

huh... where am I... oh.. hi Lonnit. Cute girl, strong expression, nice framing, good lighting and a lovely repetition of the corn'ish yellow. Not sure about her black jacket and the snip of a blanket (?) in the corner IMHO, this would have been a stunner without those elements. With them, it limits the usefulness of the picture - makes it more of an "autumn picnic" illustration.. "if you get my drift". But you're the one who is good with shapes! Nice shot, anyway. EXIF says "Flash used: No" but I smell a flash here I think? Well handled too.
