Yes, Debbie, 100 candles really do burn like that, at least if the cake is not level! No additional flames added! I have a couple of shots with even more dramatic flames but I thought no one would believe it! Lonnit, there is no soot on the ceiling but I don't know why! I was terrified of setting off the smoke alarm on the next floor and waking my husband (I was doing this at 3 in the morning) but it didn't go off either. Photographer's luck, perhaps?! We did eat the cake, it was a nice marble one, but we had to remove all of the outside icing because it had a strong flavor of smoked wax! ~Sharon

LOL

Do 100 candles really burn like that in the middle or did you Photoshop any flame?
Too too funny! A mini forest fire! Did you at least eat it?

Oh, Sharon! Great story to go with a great shot! No, I too would not have thought to be prepared to snuff. How much soot was on the ceiling? LOL! ~ Lonnit

You are all too nice! Thanks so much for your wonderful comments! Lonnit, no, I didn't actually toss the cake. The picture is a composite of three shots: hands, cake and candles with flames. I was glad I had taken a shot of the cake before the candles were lit because the flames were so bright I had to change the exposure so much that everything that wasn't on top of the cake went dark. I did have a fan ready to use to make the flames sweep back but I didn't have to use it. I tipped one side of the cake up a bit and that was enough to make the flames go backwards ... and really take off! Because the cake was tipped the flames were fed by the candles behind them and the whole thing flashed up much larger than I expected and then the melted wax and icing started dripping down the side of the cake, soaking the black cloth I had put under it and dripping onto the floor. Foolishly, I didn't have anything ready to put the flames out, I guess I thought I was just going to blow them out. There was no blowing out this forest fire! After I got my three shots I grabbed the biggest pot I had and used it like a giant candle snuffer, it worked great, much to my relief! I think all would have been fine if the cake hadn't been tipped but as it was I was afraid I was about to burn the house down! As I said - don't try this at home!
Markjay, it had to be 100 candles for the challenge! ~Sharon

Great work, Sharon! I wish I had your creativity. Would have been fun to make everyone guess how many candles were on the cake, too!! My guess would have been.... 61 ;-) Markjay

I'm assuming you didn't actually toss the cake; am I right? How did you manage to get the flames to bend properly? Did you fan them? Really great image! ~ LOnnit

Thanks, everyone! Elana, think of it as "throwing" a party! If I could have titled this I might have called it "Hey kids, don't try this at home!" Who knew that one hundred candles would make such a conflagration! I was totally unprepared for the size of the flames when all the candles were lit but managed to get a few shots and put it out before the whole thing got out of hand. A very exciting photo shoot! ~Sharon

Years are gone...And so is the cake... I do not feel celebration feeling in it (which is as well). More like letting go and be done with...Great image!
