Thanks, Nico. I only got seriously into photography 4 yrs ago. I can't believe 4 yrs has gone so quickly! It feels like half that. I was 43 at the time. I wish I would have had the DSLR when my boys were babies. I actually had an SLR for several years, even used it when my daughter was a baby, but I never ever knew even the first thing about photography or how to operate the camera. I used it solely in program mode, as a point-n-shoot.

I remember, as a child, I'd take out a book on trick photography from the school library. I was about 8 when I got my first 99cent camera. I always had a point-n-shoot. Even went thru a Polaroid phase! :) But I never got seriously into it b/c I wanted complete control. I didn't want to be stuck with only B&W, nor did I want to be a chemist, so doing my own prints was out of the question. I also had no desire to let a lab do the work, as then I felt like it's no longer my work. PS and a digi SLR made my dreams all come true. I also knew I had some artistic ability in me, but could never find what my medium was. So, when you can feel my passion in my images, it's because it was pent up for 4 decades! G-d, I love this art! ~ Lonnit

Whether obligatory or not.... still a beautiful image. And if I ever get to visit DC again, I would certainly also go home with a few shots from this location. I can kick myself for only "discovering" photography relatively late in life (with much emphasis on "relatively"... I am not THAT old!) When I did visit Washington in about 1991 or so, I still firmly believed that photography was not for me... and did not even carry a camera with me when I strolled around here. What a pity!! :-) Thanks for bringing back fond memories. Regards jnconradie

I didn't think anything of the "obligatory" comment. Actually, it was an obligatory shot. How could I go and not shoot this? LOL! I'm fine with that.

As for me though, I'll apologize to you if I offended you, Trav, in making light of it. Many people do nothing but straight photography like this, and they do it beautifully. More than shoot it, the obligation was more in terms of respecting it by keeping it a "straight shot". There are times for play and times of awe, and this just seemed to need to be treated respectfully. That's all. Sorry for offending. {{{{{Hugs!}}}}} ~ Lonnit

Oh, that wasn't aimed at you Markjay...your opinion is as valid as mine or anyone's. Rather...this idea of Obligatory Shot and a subtle put down of these, bothered me...maybe from Lonnit and Sharon....two very great photographers that can take the staid and mundane...and make it sing.

I think that's what I was saying...lol

Just to clear up someting: the fact that I was joking about the fact that this was an obligatory shot, does not t ake anything away from the fact that it was well executed and a pleasing image to look at. Notice, I did pay compliment to the image.
Didn't want anyone to take my comment the wrong way. Besides, I have a naturally sarcastic sense of humor that not everyone can appreciate at times. Again, nice shot Lonnit! markjay

Why should it not be so? Obligatory or not, this was not entirely easy to do...it has great color, a solidity to it...and so why bag on the image? If there weren't so very many great images in this Gallery I'd vote for it in a flash.

Best Wishes, Traveller

You just have to, of course. Why is that, anyway? ~ Lonnit

Well you did good with your obligation! A very striking image! I have one of the Eiffel Tower at night to match it! :-) ~Sharon

Yes, 'tis so. Does not excite the artist in me, but, as a photographer, 'twas an obligation. I don't take many night shots a la tripod, so this was good practice. Quite an annoying thing to do, actually. LOL! It's difficult to get a clear shot - grain, shake, etc. I took several at various exposure times and ISO settings. ~ Lonnit

I guess this is the obligatory shot one must take when visiting Washington D.C.? :-)
Nincely composed. Interesting how the light at the top of the monument, is reflected on the water distorted nd almost a different color! Water does play strange tricks!
