This is an awesome image. And after reading the story it occurred to me that I bet the captain wishes his decision to stay in port was a "do over or second chance" lol

Just as a follow up on the Pasha Bulker this morning they found a five metre section of her rudder wedged in a reef at Nobby's and it looks like it could be heading for the local Maritime museum.

Your right there!
The ship is the Pacha Bulker and was ordered out to sea about 4 weeks ago with 45 other vessels waiting off port.
This ship and two others took no notice of the warnings.
I caught this when the sea was in total control of the situation using a 50x500.
She ended up on Nobby's beach which is a beach in the city and just adjacent to the port entrance. One other vessel was fighting it's way back out to sea after looking like it would be beached at Merewether.Salvage crews where flown in and two ocean going salvage tugs where also bought in.
After 3 weeks they attempted to get her off the beach and back out to sea.
The rescue lasted 4 days and had to be made on the last four high tides of the month.
Now she is sitting back in the harbour, where hull inspections are taking place.
the last ship to run aground in Newcastle was the Sigma on Stockton beach under similar conditions. She could not be moved and eventually they cut her in three sections.
the stern has remained on the beach for over 20 years and is a rusting hulk.If you go back through the challengers a bit you will find a photo of her as well.

thubleau, this is a really great capture and your comment about it being a ship in trouble goes part way to answering some of the puzzles I have about the image. Like how on earth did you take it? I really hope you were not out on a nearby boat in those conditions! Which means the ship must be very close to shore, which is usually not good for big ships!!

The subdued colours heighten the reality and the waves and spray add powerful drama.

A dull day,rough seas,and a ship in trouble.
There was very little colour to start with and the only increase was in the red,the rest was very neutral.
cheers

Thubleau, this is wonderful. The limited range of colours allows the force of the image to be fully realised. Julie
