f0 - Lensfree photography

Guernsey

For this challenge I wanted to try something different and thought about how I could create an image with the camera but without using a lens. After experimenting with some shots I realised they suffered from lack of detail or any point of interest. So I thought about using sensor noise, kind of like a brushstoke to add detail. The image is a composite of two. The top is of a red and white wall at iso100 and the bottom is a dark room at iso3200. The centre is simply a blend of the two.

On attempting to give it a style, I came across the work of Mark Rothko, a Russian painter in the American Abstract style, and in particular a work called Sienna, Orange and Black on Dark Brown:

However, as this style was not my intention, I felt the title F0 - Lensfree photography was most appropriate.

I experimented with lensless photography a while ago. Here's a sampling of images I've uploaded, none of them composites. -- Victor

I'm a big Rothko fan. My image in Challenge 49,http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/image/48673604, is a Rothko and one of my favorites in the SFMOMA collection. I think you've used subtle tonal gradations of color, much the way Rothko used paint, to build visual intensity within each of the rectangular areas. Smartly done. -Michael

Naj, I like this quite a bit...especially the tonal gradations moving from left to right. Also, as might have been expected by you, this is quite a creative and intelligent take on the Challenge. Nicely done. Best Wishes, Traveller
