Group Radius 0.3

Marin Headlands, CA

Group Radius 0.3 Manifesto

The name of this Group is derived from a filter setting of the Photoshop suite. It signifies to a large extent the possibilities of algorithmic transformation of the photographic image, which is an important element in the work of members of this Group.

The chief object of the Group is to present in frequent CSLR Challenges what it considers the best contemporary photoshoppery of the West; in addition to the showing of the work of its members, it will include JPEGs from other photoshppers who evidence tendencies in their work similar to that of the Group.

Group Radius 0.3 is not pretending to cover the entire spectrum of bitmap editing or to indicate through its selection of members any deprecating opinion of the photoshoppers who are not included in its Challenges. There are great number of serious workers in bitmap editing whose style and technique does not relate to the metier of the Group.

Group Radius 0.3 limits its members and invitational names to those workers who are striving to define bitmap editing as an art form by simple and direct presentation thru Canon DSLR capture and pure algoritmic editing methods. The Group will show no work at any time that does not conform to its standards of pure photoshopping. Pure photoshopping is defined as possessing no qualities of technique, composition or idea, derivative of any other art form, unless we like it. The production of the "f.64 member," on the other hand, indicates a devotion to principles of art which are directly related to photography.

The members of Group Radius 0.3 believe that photoshopping, as an art form, must develop along lines defined by the actualities and limitations of the Adobe release schedule, and must always remain independent of ideological conventions of art and aesthetics (except, of course, for the Rule of Thirds) that are reminiscent of a period and culture antedating availability of adequate RAM for personal computers.

The Group will appreciate information regarding any serious work in photoshopping that has escaped its attention, and is favorable towards establishing itself as a Forum of Modern Photoshopping.

Elegantly balanced malicious humor.. I laughed so my belly hurt. This piece alone probably extended my lifetime with several days :)

Barry, thanks so much for such a wonderful contribution to this challenge! You are an incredibly creative person. And, I have to say, I am extremely honored to be named president! I am not sure I can retain the position because even though I am from out of the west I currently live just a bit west of Boston. But thank you all the same! ~Sharon

You were my first thought as to the artist for this - not many have that Tamron lens. Very funny essay and manifesto! :-) CJ

Sorry for the delay in revealing myself: I was away for the weekend -- which was a relief. I don't think I could have continued in the voice of "Group Radius 0.3 Co-Founder" much longer.

As we can see, I've got the words part down; now back to working on my photographic (and bitmap editing) skills!

:-) I would love to know who the "Group Radius 0.3 co-founder" is!

I mean, who actually has a command of the English language to use words such as "plebiscite" and "propitious"? Mr T? Victor? Mr Puff? :-)

Drats.... if I promise to delete all of my JPG images and only do bmp's.... (I already don't do ordinary photograph thingies anyway... so that's OK...) and I'm sort of half-way East/West ... not as west as some but not as EEEEEast as others.... then can I get on the waiting list???....

I'd like the opportunity to 'stick it' to those photopurists cos they keep givin me stick about me PP! :-) :-) ... slurp' slurp'... grovel... grovel....??

And I think ur image is just sensational... love the pseudo'out of focus'... 'blown highlightish.... soft focussy..... extreme processed.... purpley-fringed.. chromatic aberrationieffect of the water... you obviously used an L lens of exceptional quality?

In fact ... I might go out on a limb here and say.... YES... this has to be one of the best... NO... actually THE BEST image that has ever been posted in this forum... GETS my vote!......~ Melbob.... NOW... where is that bottle of scotch???

ROTFL! Well, yes, any new movement needs a manifesto. This will keep me smiling for days. -Michael

I wish to announce that as an act of solidarity with Group Radius 0.3, I have deleted those of my entries that did not comply with the spirit of their manifesto (namely a Gimp creation and a plain photo.)

Nico -- It's out of my hands now. We have a new president. Perhaps we will have a plebiscite to determine if we should form a steering committee to consider whether the time is propitious to invite comments from interested parties as to whether the manifesto should be revised to express a fresh new spirit of inclusiveness and mutual respect in light of the fact that Adobe has released Photoshop CS3 and Apple has released the 8-core Macintosh. -Group Radius 0.3 co-founder.

:-) Oh, sorry, I missed the "... in the West..." bit! :-) Can you perhaps make that definition less literal, in the sense of "West" meaning everything except, say, Outer Mongolia? South Africa is really only a couple of degreed East. Let's not have 30 degrees or so come between friends, shall we? :-) Best regards - and I would love to know eventually who to word-artist is! jnconradie

Traveller, there is a serious kernel in the manifesto: just as Group f.64 (I feel) strove to show that photography should not be considered imitation painting or drawing, but an art-form in its own right; I'd like to show that there are things that can be done with bitmap editing (even, I suppose, with the Gimp) that one would be hard-pressed to do with any other medium, including "pure" photography.

Nico, I understand that the image doesn't do anything for you. It's the chromatic aberration, right? I knew I should have used a Canon L lens! ;) But that's not why you can't be in the Group. Our manifesto clearly states that you have to be in the West.

For all other prospective members: though we don't wish to indicate through our selection of members any deprecating opinion of your work, we'll come up with other reasons as needed to exclude you. If we were to let you in to our group, how would we lord it over you? ;p

Two comments, if I may.

My first impression was "the image does not really do too much for me..." - which I guess is a definite career-limiting move in terms of having any prospect of ever becoming a member of this Group :-) :-)

The second comment being that the narrative is hilarious and deserves an accolade in its own right.

Please do let us "wannabees" know how to perhaps one day apply for membership! :-)

While I'll never be part of this group, neither will I ever be accepted into Group f/64, although I very much would like to be a member! What group can this poor wannabe join! ;-) CJ

Yup.. still as funny. And it rules me out! I have an entry in exhib made with The Gimp. Are heretics invited?

Well, now I feel stupid...it is a joke (?). Well, I am known to be gullible...still, where do I join and how much does membership cost? Best Wishes, Traveller
