Waiting for Guffman

No PP (and it was darn hard to not do a little crop, rotation, curves and USM mask, but I didn't!)

These are some the Atlanta Flickr Folk on a stroll in Piedmont Park. From left to right is (Flickr Handles) DaveRice, dke72, Maria, HamWithCam, Inside The Perimeter, OK2GO (Kneeling), Mollie Shoots, RussellReno, GogoStevie, FlorianStamm, and Mortox. Group photography is very very fun!

Pops I do that frequently.... I think that I accidently click the thumbwheel at the back whilst composing with half press.... that changes the exposure comp'. I've been caught on this several times....

I guess that is why Msrs Canon put the 'turn off wheel' switch on the back... which mostly gets switched on in my case? ~ Regards Bob.

Yeppers, This old hand made a rookie mistake. I don't know how or when it got changed but my 30d's exposure compensation was set to underexpose by 1 1/3 stops. I had to go to the manual to find out how to change it back. This old dog has learned a new trick which I should have known all along.

A tip of the Pops' Fedora to Melbob for making look into this.

Melbob -

"How obedient??? Not this group. The worst models are photographers who have just had to endure the "group photo" for the stroll. I had to shoot quickly and they all dispersed.

Recently, with the acquisition of a bigger CF card, I've started shooting both jpg and raw. It's part of my transformation to a raw shooter. I figure it's not long until I switch to just raw. I've even more recently switched my display to the histograms. I like them but I'm still getting used to them.

This image was shot with a circular polarizing filter on the lens. I think that's what's giving me the slight under exposure and saving the details in the white shirts. Unless the settings on my camera have gotten skewed somehow. I'll check that. The camera was in "P" mode.

The hardest thing to not do to this photo was a little dodging of the faces using a "Soft Light" layer in PS. Wish I'd stood a little closer, wish I'd held the camera more level.

How obedient? Can I borrow this group please?

Pops I like this and the concept is very good and as you state... frustrating in not being able to do even little tweeks to make this POP (pun... partly intended.. LOL)

I wonder whether one would have composed this differently had film been used with no chance of post processing tweeks? For example.... the differing angles of the gates/posts verticals and horizontals particularly when close to the frame edges makes me want to apply some transform tools etc.... but not allowed as you obviously understand.

I guess you stopped down (-1 1/3) to avoid 'white shirt blowout'? but I am curious if you use the histogram to check levels before taking this? ... I am not being critical here I just like to analyse photos for my own education, especially when exif is provided.

I really would be interested in your comments. Thanks for posting ~ Regards Melbob

Yea, that GogoStevie is all trouble. I understand that he gets it from his mother's first husband. - Pops
