Uphill

Death Valley

Okay, so I started to download this shot this morning, then I thought of Lonnit. What would she tell me about this shot???? Well first I thought she would not like the dark spot in the lower left so I started to clone it out. Then I looked again & saw that one of my people were right in the middle of the frame. Ummmm! I decided to crop the image which took care of both problems. In some ways I like this version better because it seems more expansive but........then again? Thanks Lonnit for teaching me to scrutinize my shots a little more! Can't wait to hear everyones ideas. Edited version to follow.

I have to say that I like this one better of the two because the big expanse in the foreground helps to make the people seem insignificant. The person in the middle doesn't bother me either. If I was going to crop this for, say, a simplicity challenge I would tilt it a little to increase the angle of the dune they are walking up and then crop down from the top to the bottom of the dune just over the left hand hiker's head. This, unfortunately, would eliminate all those lovely dunes but, I think, would give you a more powerful image. Just my opinion and it is a wonderful shot just the way it is! ~Sharon

I much prefer this shot over the tighter cropped version. TO me, the expanse makes the image into more of a minimalistic style and I have no problem with the body in the middle, it adds to the sense of movement / motion that the mind expects and understands that person is moving in the direction of the left side hiker (?). As for Lonnit, you will rarely find a photographer as analytical and observant as she is...
to her credit. She and I many times disagree or have differing opinions on the images
we critique but, that's what art is about :-) Thank you for sharing this, it's a great shot! Markjay
