IKEA Vase Addiction

A link to SKÄMT, the fatefull IKEA vases.

The Dark side of IKEA vase addiction.

Okay, first you start with glasses. Plain table glasses and you say, "Hey, all my friends are doing glasses, they're harmless. No one ever got addicted to ordinary table glasses." And before you know it there's just no satisfaction in ordinary table glasses. Besides, everybody is doing "ordinary." You've never been one of the pack, never been a follower so you experiment with shot glasses and wine glasses and glasses of strange shape and size. But it's just not the same. You start looking for bigger kicks and you descover crystal. Oh, and if you're bold you go for the designer crystal, you go for the really primo s**t. Nothing ordinary will do. Before you know it you're shooting Waterford, you're shooting lots of it. You're shooting Waterford glasses and goblets and even champagne flutes. You fill the Waterford Crystal with expensive drinks, with fine vintage wines and old single malt scotch or delicate flowers and blossoms. That makes the highs. All the while you tell your spouse and family that you can give it up anytime you want. But still your life feels empty.

Then there's that fateful day you walk into IKEA. And there they are. Small, inexpensive, and colorful. Wow, color. Colors like you've never experienced. And translucent, they simply scream wonderful things to you. So you score a vase or two. And you find that vases with backlight are the most brilliant thing you've ever done. You can't get enough. Soon, the few vases you have just aren't enough. Late at night you go back to IKEA and score some more. Pretty soon you've got the whole set and you start thinking, "I need more of that blue vase, Man, what I could do with a set of five clear vases. Oh, Man! If I only had five clear vases." They're not feeder vases, IKEA is the end of the line. They are the ultimate. When you're riding high on IKEA vase addiction, life is good. You are filled with the joy and the colors and the praise and the fulfilment of the IKEA vases. What else could you possibly want.

And then one day you think, "I wonder where I can score some Ming Dynasty Vases?"

ROTFLOL!! Excellent creativity. I would say stick to the IKEA vases, they are manageable. Stay away from the Chihuly addiction, at $35,000+ a piece, they are dangerous, if you ask me! -Cat

Heh heh. Colorful story and a colorful image, I think I need to get me some of those... --Melanie (mlynn)

Thanks Jason. The clear IKEA vase holds the silver bullet but I don't drink the silver bullet. I've never cared much for beer. I thought about opening a can of Guinness but decided to pass on the stout. I'm more of an 80 proof man but anything 80 proof just never has a head on it. So, like the vase, the beer in it is just a prop.

Still laughing about this one. As a joke, it's brilliant. As a photo, it's still brilliant, I love the light off the bottles, the pose, the vacant look... so can you hook me up with a case? ;) By the way, what are you drinking in this one?

Thanks everyone. I had a blast planning for and doing this image. It's been over 25 years since I've gone this long without shaving!

Olaf, I thought "Skämt" meant "Crack," or at least it seems like it! LOL

For those of you who don't know swedish: translated to english Skämt means Joke.

Excellent Pops, love it. This is a great SP and those vases are something else. Wish there were an IKEA in India but not yet; guess will have to wait for my next trip before picking up some of these vases. :-)

Cheers, Vikas.

Pops, that really is nicely written...with an O'Henry type twist in the end. Excellent. Interestingly, the picture actually seems to lend an air of reality to such an addiction. Best Wishes, Traveller

Hysterical Pops, both the picture and your "confession"! The stubble adds to the effect although it might be nice to see you really dark and moody looking, like a down and out addict. Very fun shot! CJ

Great portrait, and wonderful commentary. They're just $0.99 each! I have got to go to IKEA Houston this weekend and get some. I've already got the single malt scotch and some fancy beer (and cheap wine) to put in them.

Haha, makes me LOL, pops. Cute play off Nico's mag. Wait 'til you have the Chihuly glass addition. Our local art museum just paid $1.5 million for a *small* display of his glass. Anyway, great SP, theme and hilarious commentary. Warm fuzzies, -mikey

Love it! Great photography and also very funny to read the whole description. I am delighted that you took my silly cover topic in such good spirit and flattered to have inspired a great Challenge entry. Thanks, Pops. It made my day! :-) Regards ~jnconradie

It is all the fault of that Voyeur !!! He is the one that gave the game away... Nico you have a lot to answer !!! Pops was obviously underground until YOU exposed him! (Now we have to humour him!)... Pops, this is a lovely SP, particularly like the coloured thingies (don't mention that 'V'... word!) ... too busy to shave HuH? (subtle distractor!)
The photography is great too! Regards ~ Bob

Okay, Okay, I understand!! You're not alone on your search for lovely, colorful glass, Pops, but this is indeed a great shot and the commentary hillarious. I can see that Ikea is driving you to drink, so let's get the challenge over with so you can regain your sanity. Maybe we should have a rule "NO GLASS ALLOWED!" Would that help Pops? I don't know about you, but I would have to refine my landscape, portraiture or even advertising photographic skills and that may lead to a personal challenge, "Shu shoots other things.........ha ha ha." Love this shot, tho, Pops! shu
