Arn - Thanks; it was just a macro-think on 'square'. As a teen I used to set salt shakers on their edge in restaurants using the mini-cubes, blowing the excess away and leaving the shaker mysteriously standing ";^). JimH - Thanks for the comment. I spread a pinch of salt onto the chessboard, then I used a spatula to 'stack' the 2-high cubes into a square within the chess square. The single subject was manipulated using a toothpick while I looked thru the viewfinder. -mikey

Great results with simple ingredients. Eye pleasing symmetry in the set up and composition. Works well in b&w. -Arn

This is nicely done. I'm amazed at how you got the salt in the background so neatly arranged to fit the design you wanted here. However you did it, it came out great. Jim H.

Thanks for the comments, folks. Yes, this is indeed a grain of salt. Those in the background, are as well. Square, they are ";^). Cubes, actually. I thought to do this shot on a piece of black glass, but didn't have any, ha! This is my marble chess board. I went for the greyscale because the color in the 'white' squares was so muted that is was more a distraction than colorful. -mikey

Is that really a grain of salt! Wow! That's some macro lens you have there! I like your composition and that very shallow DOF. :-) CJ
