Hello :)

A wonderful capture, Michael. I don't think I'd want to meet this fellow in a dark alley, even at 2cm.

Victor, I think what you are seeing around the back legs is indeed the bokeh of the out of DOF texture of the back legs. -Michael

Hello Victor
I can see what you are talking about, but I'm not sure of the cause. It sort of looks like chromatic aberration but I haven't seen that in any other shots with this lens.
I suspect it might be that the insect actually had a red hue on the outside of its rear legs, similar to the front legs and that's what is giving that appearance.
It's more obvious than it would otherwise be because I bumped up the saturation a little to make the image obviously green.
The insect is long gone, so I can't check on its colouring now--Michael

So this was taking with that EF-S 60 people have been talking about, eh? I'm curious about one thing. Look at the bokeh around the rear legs. Or is that some sort of Photoshop artifact? Do you see what I'm talking about? What causes it? -- Victor

Yes, the hangdog look might be a result of being caught on my property.
He is about the size of a collie dog and I have him tied up in my back yard now, feeding on a side of lamb:)
Actually he was tiny - about 2 cm long and not too threatening--Michael

Really fabulous bug-eyed picture! Great capture! ~Sharon

Thanks for the comments everyone.
The insect came crawling out of a plastic bag of fruit and veg and posed obligingly on the bag, which happened to be pale green. I shifted the white balance to make the background slightly green also (it's actually my pale yellow kitchen wall)..
The bug did seem to be watching me intently and kept turning to face the camera.
Lonnit, I agree about the antennae, but one was broken off just above the top of this crop, which looked strange when included in the picture.
Regards
Michael

I've never seen such a guilty looking bug! LOL! What on earth did you catch him doing? He looks like the cat that swallowed the canary! Fantastic - although I wish the antennae weren't clipped. Excellent shot! ~ Lonnit

He's listening to you, too. See those dark patches just below the joints on the front legs? Those are ears, and they're pointed right at the camera. -- Victor
