Okay you guys, I got rid of the dock bits in the upper-right. It's something I struggled with when I was processing (leave in, leave out, leave in.... ), so your words tipped the balance. Thanks Michael and Lee ;-)

Lee, I don't thwack just anyone. That makes you special.

Hubba hubba, Nancy. Fabulous shapes and textures here. Damn, your eye just gets better and better.

As for Lee's suggestion, yeah, clone out the top left corner. As for your question, why do you need to explain the water shadows? Anyone who would think/ask about the water shadows in the upper left corner totally missed anything important in the image and you should just thwack 'em. -Michael

Is being thwacked good or bad??? I don't think any one has done that to me before! 8--) theFly

Lee [fly]: :::thwack!::: (lol... you crack me up. I kinda/sorta agree with you about the top left side, but then how am I going to justify those water shadows? Tell me that and I'll change it. ;-)

Adam, the explanation for my thought process on my camera settings is that there weren't any thoughts in my head. As I mentioned in my other boat shot, I screwed up-- had been shooting in deep shadows one moment, saw the boats and forgot everything. My histogram was okay, so I just sucked it up and didn't worry overmuch about it, promising (as always) I'd do better next time.

Vikas, yeah-- the theme really does scream for black and white. I love black and white and want to do more of it.

To the rest of you, thank you so much for your kind comments. --Nancy/odigi

Great and striking shot. Can you please explain the thoughts behind your camera settings? Adam

I love this one Nancy. A beautiful, striking composition of light, lines, and shadows. (Wish I'd taken it :).) --Melanie

Nancy, I really like this shot a lot! Very simple yet loaded with so many interesting details -- lines, curves, shadows. Very well done! -- Jeannie (jburly)

Aboslutely love this one. It reminds me so much of my days messing around on the docks...I like the composition, contrast and overall photo. Nice work!!!

Cheers,
:-D

Nice play of light and shadow Nancy, certainly fits the theme well. Guess this is one theme that lends itself beautifully to B&W shots. I guess I need to do a B&W one too. :-)

Cheers, Vikas.

Thank you Jim-- I suppose you'll be happy to know that I didn't upload the version where I really blew out the light parts, eh? lol ;-) --Nancy/odigi

Having looked at this and read the comments thus far, I tend to agree with odigi on this. I think the whole point was to up the contrast so that you have only light and shadow. But it does almost make me want to put on a pair of sunglasses when I view it! Man, I really love the lines and shapes in this one. Amazing, much better than the original shot in my opinion.

Okie dokie, Nancy. Your image... and a fine image it is. Markjayjay

Mark, I already did that version, but I really wanted to use this version, which removed a lot of the detail. The point was to create an image with mono-blocks of values. Here's one of those versions, different than yours in that it keeps the water shadows:

Nancy: I took your image and simply dropped down the mid level light. See what you think of both your (I named it Nancy Boat Image) and the levels change (Nancy Boat Image 2) ? To me, the second image shows more detail in the wood but, that's just my opin.http://www.pbase.com/markjayjay/inbox

Thank you for your comment, Mark. I've uploaded the original to show you that it isn't overexposed.

Nice composition of a great subject and yes (*) a bit overexposed. Could use a levels change IMO. Markjay

Thank you Mr. Fly-- I took your advice on the black triangle in the upper-right. Cloned that sucker out. The original isn't overexposed-- I processed the image so that the various elements would be pared down a bit, to create larger shapes yet retain a modicum of detail. I tried it darker, I tried it just black/white (no grays), and I tried a few other treatments, then in the end I decided I liked this sorta/kinda high-key version. --Nancy/odigi

Nice composition. Looks a little over exposed. I also would clone out or burn out the distraction in the top right. theFly
