Santa Monica *

Santa Monica, CA

Two blocks from the beach the sky was clear and blue, but the beach itself was so blanketed in fog you could hardly see the surfer boy in front of your face.

Jim & Lonnit -- thanks for your great comments! The things you mention were totally, 100% intentional. Yeah ... um ... intentional. That's my story.

Actually, there was so little visibility that day that I didn't think I was getting anything at all. What you see here is actually what was visible to the eye -- I didn't have to meter the sky for a silhouette or desaturate the image after the fact. This was it -- gray on gray. So I guess I did make an effort to catch the girl in mid-stomp, but mostly I was just trying to get any kind of shapes to emerge out of the fog. I took about five shots of this group and this one surprised me when I looked at it later. I was pretty tickled by it. I'm glad you like it too.

I'm glad you told me this was fog. Having been to california only a few times, I might have feared that this was either smoke from fires or just smog :)

This is such an excellent shot because of the capture of the girl's position. It's perfect. Almost like a ballet dancer caught in a well-trained movement. The way her arm is positioned just slightly behind her to allow the light between it and her back so we can see her shape. And the silouhuettes of her legs and the rest of her body as well. The tilt of her head and the fact that here hair is tied back. All perfect. This is just great and fits the theme very well.
