Third Place: Earth Circles *

This is a view from the top of "The Colin" a hill about 5 minutes from where I live.
I've taken a shot of the windmills there before http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/image/28001886
and wanted to try a star trail shot with the windmills as the foreground.

Note: Always find the easiest route up a marshy hill in daylight not at 1:00AM.
It took me an hour to find my way to my destination, probably trespassing on several farms, worrying lots of sheep and jumping about a dozen barb-wire fences.

Only on my way back down did I remember that my camera was set on ISO 400! DOH!

72 exposures of 20 seconds each blended together using lighten in PS.

Canon EOS 10D ,Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX DG ASP
72 seperate exposures at 20s f/4.0 at 15.0mm iso400 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

This is really excellent. As others have said, your dedication for this is really commendable.

I like the composition and the light. It takes dedication to make the image in the middle of the night. -Roumen

That old ISO 400 thing, happend to me a lot a while back. a very cool and hard set of shots, your dedication is second to none. Question: why id the turbine a little soft? was this an effect of combination or did the thing move?

Yes it is a hot pixel. Thanks for reminding me about that too.

That makes sense. I guess I just thought the windmill was being lit from that light to the left - didn't really think about it. Anyway, I like the shot and admire your determination. Is the little red light in the middle a hot pixel - or soemthing else? Cindy

Cindy, the foreground is bright because it was lit by a flash on the first three of the seventy-two exposures. Otherwise you wouldn't see the windmill at all.
I may clone that light on the right edge out completely I think. It is light pollution from roadworks on a nearby road.

Wow - impressive. Love the way the trails swoop down - complimentary to the windmill. My eyes keep going on down to that pole and edge of a light though - and why is the foreground so bright? Cindy

Thank you Ed. I think it deserves an A for effort, but I'm not so sure if the final image matched the effort it took to get it.
