Ok, good points. Thanks Olaf. :) ~ Lonnit

Lonnit, you are from a western culture where you read from left to right, but that really only applies to books and texts. In other parts of the world people read from right to left, or from top to bottom. When it comes to photographs there are no rules about how to "read" them - it depends on the different elements within the frame. Some photos are stronger in their inherent suggestion of reading sequence than others... I look at the whole frame at once and then I'd say the one motor boat is indeed an interruption of the pattern. To me, the way the motor boat is all the way to one side, also suggests that it is somewhat left out of the community of the sail-boats - like an ugly duckling... --Olaf.dk

The reason I was thinking that the one on the left didn't work is because it isn't an interruption of patter. The school of thought is that a pattern broken is more interesting than a pattern unbroken. To me, I figured 'how can the pattern be broken by the first boat when the pattern hasn't started yet?'. In the midst of the others would have been fine. A second choice would have been the end spot b/c there the pattern would abrubtly stop, therefore again creating a break - a surprise. At the beginning though, the pattern hasn't started yet so it's not an interruption - just sort of a cling-on that shouldn't be there. Just my personal interpretation. If I'm mistaken on this I would like to learn why. Thanks. :) ~ Lonnit

Nice blend of reflection (and inherent symmetry) and pattern. I kinda like the pattern broken by the boat on the left margin. Nice.

Very nice. I'd crop out the boat on the far left though. You don't need it for pattern interrupt because the yachts' pattern is alread irregular. The other boat looks out of place and I find it distracting. Without it I really, really like this shot. Great capture. ~ Lonnit
