Gayle - this is excellent! Great lighting, DOF and use of wide angle. - Kelly

I see working hands...a vital tool for holding those potatoes.

Love the lighting on this.

Gayle: On sharpening, not so much a matter of technique, but of personal taste. The detail on the right hand (the gentleman's left) seems a little harsh, while that on the left (his right) appears as my eyes expect. Mostly on the top two fingers and at the base of the thumb. Again, personal preference, but I would have masked off those areas to prevent any additional sharpening. Given the subject matter and direction of light, I suspect those areas came off the camera sharp enough. --Joe

Wonderfully composed shot. To my eye, it's not over-sharpened; I think the striated effect of dried mud on skin gives that impression. My hands look like that every summer weekend :-)

Gayle,
Love the shot and perspective. Excellent! I would try a bit of burning in on the thumb in the upper righthand corner. Roberta

There is no fill-in flash, that's pure Aussie sunlight you are seeing.
Joe, I use a layered approach to sharpening.....light layer, dark layer, unsharp mask of 500, 0.4, 0, then drop the opacity to 35% (dark layer) and 20% (light layer. To my eyes it appears to have been barely sharpened at all from the original. I'd love to know a better method.

I am distracted by the strong fill-in flash resulting in unnatural lighting on a topic that is rather organic.

Excellent perspective. Perhaps a tad over-sharpened, but it does emphasize the grittiness of the subject. Nice.

Nice job Gayle! BTW, have you recently shrunk? You seem to be taking lots of shots from a very low viewpoint - I LOVE that! It's becoming one of your trademarks. :) Until I just got my new (heavy!) tripod and had to lighten my backpack load, I'd been carrying around a rolled up bath towel so I could get down on the ground and shoot without getting dirty. :) ~ Lonnit

Great perspective on this one! I really like it.
Reminds me of Van Gogh's Potato Eaters. Nice job, Gayle!

I like the documentary feel of this one... how does it look in B&W? -Ed Hahn
