Victor. I did have a lot of trouble with this, though my setup wasn't ideal - I was sitting in my car. I was struggling to hold the camera in one hand, focus while holding my other hand far enough away to maintain focus... I may reshoot, but it was more an object exercise than anything. Phil

Phil, I don't think you have a lens problem. I think the problem is with the focus. See how there's an area around the edge of the finger that is in clear focus? The picture is just backfocused a bit. Try reshooting with better focus. If your camera/lens combo needs calibration, try manually focusing and bracket a bit to make sure you get one that's clear. -- Victor

Earl, I say post your image anyway. No one's going to knock you as a copy-cat. I think there is only one negative aspect of posting the same idea as someone else. If the subject is obvious enough that many of us think of it, then I think it would have less of a chance of winning. Common subjects don't win photo contests unless they are shot in a unusual way.

Just look at the two photos of staples. They both treat the subject differently. If you can think of a better way to make an interesting composition out of staples, then go for it!

There isn't a photograph taken in the last 20 years that isn't of the same subject as photos taken in the previous 20 years. (excluding, of course, new technology). It's the same old flowers, landscapes, people, bugs, etc, etc.

Besides, I think your fingerprint photo is different enough to merrit posting.

Looks like you have a better macro lens than me! This was taken with a very cheap Sigma, but it's the one that gives me the closest macro... You should still post yours I think, it's the same subject matter but different, IMO. Phil

Phil, this is too funny. I just went to upload my latest image and what do I see... You beat me to the punch! Well dang. I feel funny posting my image now so here is a link for you to check out my image that would have been posted as Pattern of Identity .

I guess great minds think alike. Nice one Phil. Earl-
