The bug is fixed now, I think. It happened when downsizing the file for the cslr site.

As usal, I did this with RIOT, a plugin for IrfanView, because I can decide whether to keep all EXIF data and, as opposed to PS, the targetted size of the output file is indicated exactly to the last byte and it is never exceeded. Smaller file sizes can be achieved not only by changing jpg quality but also by changing chroma subsampling - and there was my mistake. After saving the file with subsampling set to 4:2:2 now, the pixelation is gone. I'll keep my fingers off the subsampling setting in the future; apart from this issue, this tool offers an easy way to cut down file size below an exact value while keeping image quality as high as possible.

Thanks for your comment, Michael.

Yes, these are two flowers, each one on its own stem, the stem of the nearer one goes through a gap between the petals of the other one so they are almost concentric. They were about 6 or 8 cm apart from each other, this made it easy to achieve a big difference in sharpness.

I appreciate you calling my attention to the pixelationn of the background petals. I did not notice this effect last night when I prepared the file for upload, perhaps I was too tired at 1 a.m. but it is there and I find it very annoying. It is not there on purpose. This is a single shot, as described above, no composing, no local changes. I only cropped the image and applied the basic editing procedure in ACR and some overall sharpening. The original image looks okay; if I can find the reason for this effect, I'll upload a corrected version as soon as possible.

Regards, Gerald

This is an amazing image Gerald. Is it just the one flower? Maybe not, given the title. I'm also seeing some pixelation in the background, as though that part of the image has been re-sized from a lower resolution, or is that a deliberate part of the process? It's a very striking shot, anyway. Regards, Michael
