3rd place
Spring by Olaf

3rd place Eligible

Sitting on a train more than ten years ago, I noticed this single tree in the middle of a small field for the first time, thinking to myself: this would be a perfect subject for a series of photos portraying the seasons of the year and the passing of time. Out of the way, a place I only pass by train, it has taken me this long to start realizing the idea. If anything, starting with Spring seems appropriate.

the hard part will be deciding what color border to use on the other three. Penny Street

Stunning, Olaf. Also from my side: cannot wait for the other three to follow. Everything just works together textbook-perfectly. Compliments Nico

Nice capture. I like the placement of the tree to the left. I saw this with and without the border. The border definitely adds impact to the picture. -dtallakson

A LOVELY yellow field punctuated by the tree. I can't wait to see the other three in the series, Olaf. ~Lydia

Thank you Penny! Yes a white frame helps, but I still like it better without a frame on a brighter background. I've added a 20px wide frame.

I can't even believe I'm asking you this (the thought came when looking at Lonnit's picture in Exhibition) but did you try a white border of some kind?
And yes, it would be worth the trip back (this time it would be quicker because you know the point of view you're after) to return in different seasons. Beautiful.

Thank you Tom and Humberto! Tom, I was unclear in the caption: this is actually taken on site with tripod, bubble level, polarizing filter, four-step bracketing etc. I went there with a purpose and was there for about half an hour, shooting from different points of view etc. (this was the last point of view).

Nice shot and all the more satisfying for being captured from a moving train. Such transitory images even of are the essence of photography. -tv

Hi Olaf,

Yes, it does look better with white background. Nice shot!

Cheers,

Eric, sorry for the confusion and thank your for your additional comments! I didn't create the Pending gallery - it was there and I utilized it for the reasons stated in my comment on the photo in question.

Your comment about cropping off sky and increasing saturation on the other shot didn't pass unnoticed, and I've posted a more saturated and square version of that shot, in pending as I still like this one the best. The square version is good in its simplicity, but a bit too static in its composition, I believe. The two photos are not taken from the same point of view and I don't really care for the way the trunk of the tree is almost completely hidden behind a hill in the other shot.

By the way, this is another example of a photo that does not look its best against the dark grey background of these challenges. The bottom of the photo is too close, in tone, to the dark background. I've posted this in my own galleries as well, but against a brighter background, which looks a lot better imo.http://www.pbase.com/olafdk/image/112016663

OK I got your point and now understand.
The wide shot is good because it is better balanced with less sky, however, I would have chopped the original sky and racked uo the saturation to make it look like 3 or 4 bands of colour.

I just noticed why.
Someone moved it to the pending gallery ???
I didn't create a pending gallery because i don't believe in a pending gallery.
If the image was oversized I can fix that , if it was shot out of the time frame I can delete that, if it was not on subject than the voters can fix that...........just my humble opinion

I like the seperation of colour you have achieved although I would probably liked to boost the saruration a tad.
Seems like dejavu my first comment fanished into the ether.
