Shek Kip Mei is located in the north of Kowloon and mainly a residential territory. It was once a refuge area when immigrants from Mainland China fled to HK during the Chinese Civil War in the 40s.
After the major 1953 SKM fire, the government launched a public housing program for the immigrants. As a result, Shek Kip Mei Estate was built, and it is the first public housing estate in Hong Kong. All the blocks, except Block #41, are unfortunately under demolition for redevelopment at the moment (2008).
