This picture is of the so-called 'Pierremont Vase', a 20ft high fountain originally commissioned by Henry Pease in 1869 for Pierremont Park, an extension to his Pierremont Estate on a site landscaped by James Pulham & Son. In 1925, after the park had been turned into a nursery, and before redevelopement into Pierremont Gardens, the fountain was relocated to South Park.

My Uncle, a Mr Charles Smallwood, was Head Gardener at the award winning Darlington South Park leading up to this period. I was pleased to see this image of his work.

I spent many happy holidays and visits to Darlington and Hurworth in the 1950s to 70s. Our transport was Mr Holland's bus, a Bedford, from Darlington passing the Kettlewell Farm to the Comet at Croft and then to Hurworth; it dropped us at the Fountain.

My family lived and worked in Hurworth and Neasham from the 1800s, the Batley and Corpse families.

Obviously I can't be 100% sure but I think the 2 ladies pictured to the left of the fountain might be my mother and sister. Irene Stanton and Susan Bentley. Unless anyone knows any different that is? I have tried to enlarge the picture but it becomes too grainy to be certain.
