Marton Grove has not been demolished. It is opposite the playing field on Abbey Road.

The Durham County Record Office catalogue lists a planning application (Ref No. Da/NG 2/6402) from 17 January 1933 for alterations to Marton Grove in Abbey Road for Mr. D. Wildsmith; Kitching & Co., architect, (plan no. 1933/41).

Is it possible to obtain a higher resolution view of the two figures? It seems possible they might be T.W.Marley and his wife Alice.

Thomas William Marley and his wife Alice moved into this house sometime between October 1903 and December 1904. They had 8 children, including Muriel. Their son William was killed at the battle of Arras in 1917. T.W.Marley was the Secretary, and in 1923 Chairman & Managing Director of the North Brancepeth Coal Co. Ltd. The British Library holds a copy of his 1919 monograph "The question of the Nationalisation of the Mines". The son of Thomas Marley and Jane Rayne, T.W. Marley was a noted amateur genealogist. His genealogical notebooks and papers are preserved in the Northumberland Record Office. He researched the histories of the Marley, Rayne/Raine and Middleton families of Teesdale (among others), and was an active member of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne. The British Library has a copy of his 1920 book "The Marleys of Langton, Ingleton, Hilton and Houghton-Le-Side in Co. Durham [with Genealogical Tables]".

Marton Grove was situated in Abbey Road, according to Ward's Directory 1921-22 the house was occupied by a T.W Marley secretary (telephone no 2065), Darlington Year Book and Business Directory of 1921 lists the occupants as Thomas William and Muriel E Marley. I
By 1937 Marton Grove had been divided into two, Marton Grove East occupied by a Mr Ernest Black and West by a Percy Wildsmith.
Going beyond the Second World War there is no mention of Marton Grove. My guess is that it was located towards the Carmel Road end of Abbey Road and was demolished to make was for Abbey Road Primary School or possibly the flats opposite ?
