Angeles Forest - After the Station Fire

The Angeles Crest Hwy. opened to commuter traffic Nov. 30, 2009. I drove as far as Mt. Waterman on Hwy. 2 and into Big Tujunga Canyon. I expected to find a lunar landscape with complete devastation, but instead I saw patches of green and a stark beauty in denuded hills which reminded me of Death Valley. Regrowth has already started at the base of Laurel Sumac trees and unseasonal blooms of Yucca are getting a head start on regeneration.
