Most recently a nursing home, this building has also been used as a recovery center, hospital, and original a resort. The oldest parts predate the Civil War. It has been abandoned since the early 1990's.

I was there with my wife 10/21/10. Still the same place from the front. Spring is walled off to prevent further damage. Apparently bottling water behind the old hotel. I house available for rent.

My grandfather, Dr. Joseph U. Rohr, was the head physician at Sweet Springs in the 1950s. I have such fond memories of this beautiful place during visits when I was very young. My grandfather had retired as a urologist in Charleston, WV then took this State position at Sweet Springs. My grandparents were given a charming, modest country home near the institution. The State also provided a housekeeper from a nearby state prison (I remember Mary, who was in for stabbing her husband, was my babysitter sometimes - my Papo said she was not to be feared, that her husband had abused her). I can still remember the smell of the clean, sweet air, rolling grasslands, and many visits to the "old folks home", where my sister and I freely roamed the grounds and buildings. Sometimes (ok, mostly) the elderly residents frightened us, but my grandfather encouraged us to speak to everyone, explaining that they craved and needed attention, and that it was as good for us as it was for them. We eventually we became pretty comfortable among the "guests". I'll always be grateful to him for pushing us to overcome our fears of the old, sometimes demented, and always lonely patients. My grandfather also made us take a dip in the springs, which I remember as having a foul odor and an ugly, murky green appearance. I have a brochure of Old Sweet Springs when it was a resort in early 1900s. It claims the springs cured a plethora of maladies, including kidney and heart trouble, skin diseases, obesity, arthritic infections, and dandruff. According to the brochure, it was quite the resort - offering a golfer's paradise, riding,fishing, tennis, and the largest and finest ballroom in the mountains. I last saw Sweet Springs about 25 years ago. We were on our way to a family vacation at a NC beach, and my sister and I persuaded our less than enthusiastic husbands to make this out of the way stop to revisit our childhood memory. The main building had not changed that much. The air still smelled sweet. But my grandparents home, which was not far from the main buildings, was abandoned, not at all the lovely, homey dwelling we remembered. My grandfather retired from Sweet Springs in 1958, moved to Roanoke VA where he, once again, couldn't stand retirement and worked at a Veterans' Hospital. Is it really abandoned now? Can someone please let me know if anything is still there? I would love to visit just one more time. Judi Pence Columbus, OH

Great Photos! I was there in 2004 and met the new owner Sam Morrow from Newton NC at the time he was 76 years old and had a 15 year plan to restore the resort. I did not get inside but took lots of photos of the grounds. Lonnie Webster

...wow... I must admit, "Letter to Grandma" made me cry. Very creepy yet elegant place. (( I do tend to love your black and white photographs best))
