The Baron, William Brown b.20-09-1769 d 17-01-1846

Courtesy of Enid Cruickshank:
This is a scan of the only picture found of William Brown, The Baron, of Galashiels. As he was born before the advent of photography, there wouldn't be a daguerrotype of him in his youth. R.Hall: A history of Galashiels, published at the end of the 19th Century, so the original isn't brilliant either.

Apologies for not signing my message about William Brown. I'm interested in this family because my husband is a GGG grandson of David Brown, reportedly a member of this family, and Elizabeth (Betty) Mercer b. Galashiels 1794 and daughter of James Mercer and Margaret Scott. We've found records suggesting that David and Betty married in Melrose, Roxburgh, in 1814, shortly before they left for Canada. Their son Francis was born soon after they arrived in Quebec. In 1834, David and his family moved to Metcalfe Township, MIddlesex County, Ontario, and were among the first settlers of this area

Your picture collection is wonderful but I regret to inform that the image identified as William "The Baron" Brown (1769-1846) is more likely a picture of his grandson William (1822-1890). Marshall Wane, who is listed as the photographer, was born in 1833 and established his studio in Edinburgh about 1879. Impossible (or very, very unlikely), that he took this picture when he was only 13. The picture that you label a Daguerreotype of The Baron Brown and his sons, may, in fact, show The Baron's son Henry (1796-1860) and his sons James (left) and William, the fellow in the Marshall Wane.
