Hi Betsy, If your salamander looked like the one in the top row of photos, I suspect it's probably the same species - Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) as they live in your range as well as in mine (I'm from Canada). This species can look quite a dark brown -- almost more like black, but they always have the distinctive yellow markings - two rows of red spots. I checked online and found a great website for the salamander species of Tennessee. You have a lot of species there. If the spots on your salamander are more like speckles than actual spots, it might be one of the other species. On page 2 of this site, there are at least three species with whitish or yellowish speckles or small spots (Plateau, Northern Slimy and Wehrle's salamanders). If you wanted to figure out the identity of your salamander, you should consider size, range, and markings. That should help to find a match on this website. great photos! they were all taken at murphy's point right? anyways, i've got 2 redbacks and 4 blue-spotted salamanders at home and i'd like to add a yellow-spotted to my collection....how big were they???

beautiful!! I love salamanders and have found 5 species here at home.. they always feel like cold gummy bears when I move them ;)
