We found something like this pictured below after cutting the lawn. It was huge, at least 5 inches long and a half inch diameter. It could "crawl" very fast, I barely got to it before it disappered into the garage! What do they eat? Are they damaging to yard shrubs and trees. Any help is appreciated.

I found one like this but it was brown and the head was like a helmet slightly detached from the torso. Is this a different type of species and does it grow into a butterfly or a moth?

Hi Julie - Yes, I think there may be a brown variation of these -- or perhaps it's a closely related species.
