Jim - Yes, I've been told that these hornets have quite a sting. However, I have not yet been stung by one, although I do spend quite a bit of time photographing hornets and bees. If you are careful when working around them, they will usually ignore you. However, when they feel there is a threat to their nests, I believe that's quite another matter!

often referred to as white tail hornets by vermonters and tree surgeons, these buggers swing a sledgehammer when they sting, and seem to have a "grumpy, don't even look at me" attitude. i have a picture of a nest hanging 20 feet up in a maple, built on a half inch diameter branch, as big as two basketballs. five to ten feet of sway when the wind blows.
