I held one on my sleeve and it let out a red molassesy goo. I was curious if maybe it is poisonous?

Justine - No, Monarch caterpillars are harmless. Because they eat milkweed leaves, their bodies contain certain chemicals that make them take unpleasant to some predators such as birds.
