How about a Dobsonfly? Take a look at the one in this gallery. Iy's a female. The male has much larger mandibles. http://www.pbase.com/crocodile/corydalidae

Hello. I have been searching the internet all day trying to find out what this is. I can take a photo of it but I don't want to disturb it it is resting on my lamp at the moment. Let me discribe it for you, maybe you can figure it out. Ok first the wings are exactly like a dragonfly's wings. The part that confused me is dragonflies don't have long antennae. It's antennae are as long as its body, very thin with a club or ball at the end like a butterfly's antennae. The body is hairy at the head and thorax, not so hairy on the abdomen. I would say it looks like a robber fly with Butterfly antennae and dragonfly wings. It also has mandibles so it is not a butterfly. oh the size... It is about 1 1/4 inch long from head to rear. the antennae are also about 1 1/4 inch long. I'll work on getting a good picture of it. I will check back for your reply. Thank you.

Michal - If it has long antennae, it can't be a dragonfly. Just guessing, but the only insect that I can think of that is that large, has antennae, and is about the colour and shape that you've described is the Dobsonfly... probably a female as the male have very conspicuous mandibles. Hello, my name is Michael and I have a ery perplexing insect that I believe could be in the dragonfly family. I don't have a digital of it, so I'll try to explain as best I can. It is about 4" from tail to nose, then at the head are long antennae that are thick at the head and thin out as the extend twards the ends. The body itself looks like a very large dragonfly larvea with two sets of wings that fold almost angled down in the direction of the tail. It's color consist of a graish brown with lace type wings with the same coloring. We live in Manchester,NH and have never seen such a creature ever! This insect was found on our moonflower, ( evening glory, which is part of the morning glories, just alot bigger flowers ). If you have any info that I could use I would appreciate it very much, and thank you for your time. Michael

Hi i've enjoyed looking at your pictures, particularly the insect ones which have helped me out with some of my pictures. i'm not too up on some of the insects but have quite a bit of experience with Dragonflies and damselflies and I have a few comments that migh help you with that gallery. On page three the unknown at the top of the page is a Black-shouldered Spinyleg (Dromogomphus spinosus) Reasonably distinctive pattern but the clincher is the unique pattern of spines on the legs. Only this species has spines of two different lengths which can be seen nicely on your photo 3. The photo labeled Dragonhunter, while a Clubtail is not the Dragonhunter which is larger and more robust which a different upper thorax striping. The Dragonhunter also has a cross-vein in the wing triangle which this species is missing. Not sure what it is though, probably one of the Arigomphus, which have an "H" shaped top thorax stripe like this. Most likely A. furcifer the Lilypad Clubtail. This species has yellow terminal addendages that this looks like it has though the picture is not clear at this place. Interestingly the end of the abdomen narrows abrubtly which no adult clubtail shows. This being a newly emerged individual I imagine it has not finished pumping up its abdomen and the last segment, furthest from the thorax, has not yet expanded properly. The sympetrum on this page is the White-faced (S. obtrusum), the only one with a white face which you can just see. The mating damselflies are Powdered Dancers (Argia moesta). On page 6 the unidentified is a Halloween Paennant and the picture labeled Damselfly is a Violet Dancer - Argia fumipennis violacea. The sub-species found in Canada is violet purple, the only damselfly of that colour here. Hope this is of some interest to you. David
