Thames sailing barge on the River Orwell

these are now used for daytrips and 'hospitality' outings, but were once the mainstay of local cargo carrying

Great to see a Thames Barge Under Full Sail Chris.
For Gary's interest;To make a sail more efficient and to prolong its life they are dressed with a mixture of oil (traditionally fish oil), seawater (&/or horse urine if available!) and red ochre. The red ochre is purely a colouring agent, without which the sails would look a dirty grey colour. Sail dressing often had "secret" ingredients. Modern sail material is made in the traditional colour, and nowadays you can buy modern sail dressings readymade in large cans.

I am glad that this sailing barge has fun new life. I find it that the sails are a strange color, but it sets it off from other sailing vessels. I really like this work. V.
