this would have been the coachman's view back after delivering his passengers to the front door (the top of which is visible at extreme left) and before going on to the coach-house yard and stables
The gatehouse is behind the arch; on the left are the gables of the main house and the the magnificent full height bay-window. Note how the windows of the great hall are higher than all 3 storeys of the gatehouse, which I imagine was the living quarters for 2 sets of senior retainers, one each side of the arch
The house is a fascinating glimpse of the last of the English architecture of the late middle ages with its steep roofs but with the decoration of the new classical revival coming into fashion, yet without the later rather pompous symmetry of overall form
