west tower

...before proceeding to the nave. On the right is the south-west transept and on the left where the north-west transept isn't. It fell down a while back and the recent £45M estimate to rebuild it was not received with much warmth. At that rate the whole Cathedral would be around £2 billion now, but imagine doing all that work when every stone and timber had to be cut by hand after transporting by horse and waggon over undrained fenland.

Then finally, contemplating the scale of this subsidiary tower, what was the main central one like? (before it decayed and was replaced by the octagon)
