brick kiln

this is a working replica of the C19th kiln that was used on the estate for making their own bricks. It has a capacity of 7000 bricks which would originally have been hand moulded on site, but are now supplied unburnt by a local brickworks.

The bricks are stacked around a central coal fire with brick fragments among the stacks and has 3 side hearths (one visible to right). It is fired, sealed and left for 48 hours. On old houses you find the poorer quality bricks used on inside faces where they are plastered over and the best on the outside, thus avoiding waste from relatively crude process
