the medieval hall and heart of the house is on the left. There was probably a 'solar' or private wing at the left, a bit like the later replacement of the kitchen/service wing on the right.

Wherever you see a medieval house with gables each side of a centre, the chances are that the centre was originally a full height single room hall, the social heart of the house and manor. Most had floors put in in the C16th when they started going soft and tried to heat the buildings rather than clustering round where the carcasse of the day was being spit-roast
