This is an interesting technique. The bird bander blows gently on the bird's tummy. Bird's skin is quite transparent, so you can see a reddish color, indicating no fat, or a whiter color indicating some fat accumulation. These birds have just gone throught a Vermont winter or just migrated, so no fat was found.
