PEREGRINE FALCON PROJECT

As part of his regular monitoring of Fife raptors Harry Bell suggested that a photographic record of a Peregrine Falcon family sited in a securely fenced disused quarry would be beneficial to his reports. An SNH licence was applied for and granted and shortly after the eggs had hatched photography started. The initial plan was to make a hide at the edge of the quarry site but this proved too dangerous and so views were confined to looking up to the rock face, which unfortunately faced north. This limited severely the light and photography was only really possible in the afternoons and at distances which stretched my camera lenses.
However the gallery hopefully gives an idea of how their nesting evolved. Four chicks hatched and all fledged and departed with the parent birds. One interesting aspect was how intolerant the female was of the male feeding the chicks. He seemed very willing to and did feed the family when the female was not around but got short shrift when she came back!
