Dear Craig,

I am a lecturer at Stellenbosch University and I am doing research on queer carnival. I have discussed your images (with proper reference) in my Master's thesis - they are great images!

I am currently in the process of publishing a book on the Cape Town Pride Parade, and I would like to use some of your photographs (about 4) as reference within the publication. The proper credits will be included, and this might also be a wonderful opportunity for you to see your work used within an academic publication.

Can you please contact me asap as I urgently need to finalise the book and its content?

Many thanks!

Ernst van der Wal

Hi Craig,
I'm working at Tourism New Zealand Korea office. I found the photos of Ponsonby's Frankly Road with Christmas lights. Could you kindly send me one or two images over 1MG? If you don't mind, I'd like to use it for media. And surely I'll credit you.

As a post script, because I know there will be some expats and othere (why are there so many expats anyway) who will get their knickers in a twist about my comment.. I did a search for South Africa Squatter (informal shanty town) which tossed out a few articles, but very little photographic content. Maybe it's a project for someone else on pbase. Thanks agaain Craig! You are nmber one in my "guest"book.
Thomas 06-Aug-2006 03:14
Excellent photographs of the 8% that is Snowy Cape Town city. You don't need my compliments Craig, I have no right nor talent as you. Your eye for the architecture is stunning. You capture the essence of how all regimes have wanted to display our country to attract all sorts of high spending visitors. Some other comments in this guest book are EXTREMELY valid though. When next you visit Cape Town metropolis, venture out of the confines of the main CBD if you will. There are many beauties to see beyond: on the Flats, and in the shanty towns that sprawl across the greater Cape Town metropole and house the everyday people.

I stumled onto your site by accident, spent too much time but enjoyed each moment looking at good quality pictures and their "comments / discription". I'm going down to CT in April and hope to get good weather to also try my steady hand on a few cool pics.
Thanks for a great site. PS - The racial idiots that target sites like these, get out, we are getting sick and tired of it, this is a artist, not a politician or rugby coach who needs dictation.

Dear Lawry,
As an ex South African, I don't understand your comments. The 'whites' of SA have not been in political control of the country for the past 11 years - why not have a 'go' at the ANC, rather than picking on a photographer who has produced beautiful images. Just for your information, these so called white areas you refer to are open to all races. If you want to see the current state of the nation, I suggest you go out there and pay a personal visit, comments like these without personal experience of the status are negative.

Hi Craig,

Been living in London for 2 years, just stumbled across your site today by sheer accident ...( lucky for me ! )
Was born in Constantia, lived next door to Groot Constantia on Witaboomen Farm, grew up there as a child...You have captured it as beautifully as I remember it ! Thanks for sharing your artistic impressions !

Best wishes

Hi Craig, I've stumbled across your gallery while researching on South Africa street photography. From what I can see from your photos, it seems like the country is still divided by the racial line right down the middle. Whilst most of your photos show the glamour and beautiful 'White' side of South Africa, I'd be keen to see more social commentary from your lenses regarding the current state of the nation. Afterall, isn't the country dominated by 80% colored people with poverty looming over many parts of it?

I don't really know what to make out of your photos, because I don't think this is the real South Africa. Having said that I've only browsed through approx 1/5 of your photos, do correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers!

Hello Craig, Just wanted to say hello and say I enjoyed looking at your photos. I must say they are well taken and are wonderful. Great job!! I was wondering if I would be able to use a few for a page I would like to add a page to my personal site about South Africa. I would love to come visit the city of Cape Town and get to know the people that live there. I'm sorry I didn't see a link for your email address but maybe you will get to read this guestbook post I left you. If you could write back about the pics I have in question that would be great. I would give credit and a link to your site. If you want to check out my site before hand feel free. The URL is "www.kenny101.net" Well I look forward to hearing back from you on this matter. Thanks!

Dear Craig,
I forgot to mention that the book will be about the entire continent. Also it's title will be: "Africa's Legacies of Urbanization: Unfolding Saga of a Continent."
Again, all my best,
Stefan
Stefan Goodwin 06-Jun-2005 00:19
Dear Craig,
Your photographs are fabulous!!! I hate living in the dark ages with respect to people's prejudices having to do with race, gender, orientations, etc. It is in this spirit of furthering enlightenment that I now write you to ask you help in a project that I have underway as an anthropologist. Many distortions relating to Africa are visual ones resulting from the fact that for large areas of the continent people see more photos of landscapes, wild animals, and "the bush" than of urban life. Within ten days, a manuscript that I have written for Lexington Books here in Maryland (USA) will be entering the final proofing stage and I would like very much to have nonexclusive rights to publish a couple of your photos of Cape Town in black and white in this book Naturally, you would be acknowledged by name as photographer for your contribution. If you approve, the photos that I most want to use are either of the panoramic shots Cape-Town-3-city2.jpg OR Cape-Town-3.jpg ALONG WITH AS A SECOND SELECTION Cape town city.jpg (historical buildings). I hope that you will join me in bashing prejudice. I find your work very inspiring and hope to hear from you soon. All my best, Stefan Goodwin

Hey, Craig.
I grew up in Camps Bay, but now I'm sitting here in the middle of central Texas, so I'm really enjoying your photos. We have bikes and photography in common. I own a 2002 Kawasaki Concours and my Nikon D100 is on order. My friend Marshall has a 2003 Honda VFR800. I've just started here on PBase. See my A60 photos at http://www.pbase.com/kingoftheants

Dear Craig,
The pictures keep the expats alive - as well as those of us heading back soon. Could you email me when you have a moment, I would like to extend you an invitation to a place that I think you, with your penchant for great photo ops, would enjoy. It's (still) a well-kept secret, but perhaps with your help, we can make it less so.
Thanks, Jacob.

What's up Craig
I' a gay man living in USA. My friend and I will be visiting South Africa in November'04. We will be staying for a week in Strand, Cape Town and another week in Umhlanga , Durban b4 heading to Sun City for a safari. We are looking for cool places to do in Cape Town and Durban: gay night spots, nude beaches,"touristy" type places to go to etc- we are thinking of Robben Island;Stellenbosch and Cape Pointe as one of them - what do u suggest. We will be renting a car- is driving to Durban from Cape town worthwhile or should we fly instead. Your suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanx
JaKe 25-May-2004 12:05
Dear Craig - Will you at some point take some pics of the new developments in Strand, I see that you listed them on Skryscraper Forum, and I know some are already under construction?
Otherwise, Outstanding Work, Keep it up!

Great galleries Craig. After a few years in New Zealand, your photographs almost helped me to forget why we left South Africa in the first place. I particularly enjoyed your scenes of the Waterkant, one of my favorite Cape Town places.
