Not knowing what to expect, I went to Pompeii. I guess I just expected one street of half-houses with some mummies or something. Instead what I found were there remains of a metropolis, an obviously wealthy one. Pompeii is MUCH bigger than I ever thought (it takes about 30 minutes to walk from one side to the other), and its remaining structures incredible. Highly highly recommended on any tourist itinerary anywhere near Naples.
