Pauline -- keep in mind that I believe we are seeing more than one osprey on the nest now. I think we're seeing a little of the original female, some of the intruder female (she has a slightly darker necklace) and some of a male. We're not sure if the male is the father or another male that is visiting the nest. But they're not all the same bird.

I do think parents might feel a loss at suddenly having no eggs to incubate. But keep in mind that ospreys go through quite a few nesting seasons in a lifetime, and the odds are such that some of them will not go smoothly. But they'll be back to try again next year.

How does losing her eggs affect the female mentally? I have checked the cam several times & each time she is looking down at the spot where the eggs should be.

The pictures are beautiful. Yes, nature can seem to be cruel. The mother did her very best but I was getting a sinking feeling, watching her day after day, all alone. Hopefully she'll recoup, as I'm sure she was getting weak, to return next year. Thanks for the pics.

It is like losing a fav pet, we had watched and watched through mating, having an intruder egg in the nest, the laying of 3 eggs only to watch them be destroyed by a crow doing what they do best.........survive by any means........who knows, maybe it was a mom with babies to feed also. Mother nature is to us, cruel sometimes,but is not for us to question Her ways.
