The following 3 subspecies are being recognised:
Egretta garzetta garzetta - South-Europe, Africa, South-Asia to Japan, Philippines. Recently Barbados and Antigua;
Egretta garzetta nigripes - Greater Sunda to New Guinea and Aru Island;
Egretta garzetta immaculata - West-, North- and East-Australia and Tasmania.
