The following 8 subspecies are being recognised:
Ploceus cucullatus cucullatus - Mauretania to Chad, south through West-Africa to Gabon and Northwest-Congo;
Ploceus cucullatus bohndorffi - North-Gabon to North-Congo, Uganda, West-Kenya and Southwest-Sudan;
Ploceus cucullatus abyssinicus- Ethiopia to Southeast-Sudan;
Ploceus cucullatus frobenii - South-Congo;
Ploceus cucullatus collaris - Gabon to Southwest-Congo and North-Angola;
Ploceus cucullatus graueri - East-Congo to Rwanda, Burundi and West-Tanzania;
Ploceus cucullatus nigriceps - South-Somalia to Kenya, Tanzania and North-Mozambique. São Tomé;
Ploceus cucullatus spilonotus - Southeast-Botswana to South-Mozambique, South-Africa and Lesotho.
