North-Africa to India. Winters to South Africa.
The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Merops persicus persicus - Egypt to Lake Balkhash and Hindu Kush. Winters to South Africa;
Merops persicus chrysocercus - Northwest Africa (south of Atlas Mountains). Senegambia to Lake Chad.
