Eastcentral-Mexico to French Guiana, south to Peru, Bolivia and South-Brazil. Trinidad.
The following 3 subspecies are being recognized:
Thyroptera tricolor tricolor - Mexico to Venezuela, Guianas, Peru and Trinidad;
Thyroptera tricolor albiventer - Northwest-South America;
Thyroptera tricolor juquiaensis - Southeast-Brazil.
