The following 6 subspecies are being recognized:
Lycalopex culpaeus culpaeus - Central-Chile, West- and Central-Argentina;
Lycalopex culpaeus andinus - altiplano of Peru, Bolivia and North-Chile;
Lycalopex culpaeus lycoides - Tierra del Fuego;
Lycalopex culpaeus magellanicus - Argentina and South-Chile;
Lycalopex culpaeus reissii - Ecuadorian Andes and extreme South-Colombia (Nariño);
Lycalopex culpaeus smithersi - Argentina (Córdoba Mountains).
